There are two
major telecommunication companies in Dubai. Emirates
Telecommunications Corporation - Etisalat was established in 1976 and
provides all telecommunication services to the United Arab Emirates.
Du is the new telecommunication services provider in the UAE. All
phone calls made within Dubai is free.
Phone numbers
can be found in the yellow and white page telephone directories which
can be found at any Etisalat branch and at your hotel.
Public Phones
Phone cards are
widely available at bookstores, selected petrol stations, hotels and
supermarkets for Dhs30.
Area Codes
Local calls
require a seven digit number.
These are the
codes to phone prior to the main number for the following Emirates:
02 -Abu Dhabi, 06-Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain, 07-Ras Al Khaimah
and 09-for Fujairah.
If you are
calling Dubai from the Emirates mentioned previously, dial 04
followed by the main seven digit number.
The
international dialing code for Dubai is + 9714.
The
international dialing code for making a call is 00 followed by the
specific country code and telephone number.

Calling Cards & GSM Options
Phone cards are
available at bookstores, selected petrol stations, hotels &
supermarkets for Dhs30.
Smart Cards are
disposable Prepaid Calling Cards with an electronic chip. Available
in a Dhs30 denomination and can be used to make local and
international calls from any payphone in the UAE. Available from
Etisalat, Du & mobile outlets.
If you plan to
stay long in Dubai, the 'Wasel' prepaid GSM SIM card option may be
more suited. It allows for free incoming coming calls for a year and
allows prepaid outgoing calls. Take your passport along and apply at
any Etisalat or Du branch. The prepaid cards are available in Dhs25
and Dhs40 denominations.
Mobile Phones
Most mobile
phone are compatible, but some US phones may not work. Check with
your supplier. Mobile phones are asked to be switch off in cinemas
and theatre shows.

services are widely available at all the hotel business centres.
There are also many internet cafes
where you can enjoy a coffee and something to eat. Rates vary from
