Neighbourhoods
Deira
Deira is the hub of commerce and home to trading companies, souks
and shopping malls. Modern buildings tower over the old wooden dhows
that trade their cargo before embarking on the arduous journey to India
and other traditional markets. Pungent spice soukhs are surrounded by
fresh fish and fruit and vegetable markets. Air-conditioned malls
provide comfortable shopping, cinemas, food courts and children's
entertainment.
Bur Dubai
Across the creek is Bur Dubai, the heart of the financial district.
The main street here has been nicknamed Bank Street. Further up are
computer and electronic stores. The Heritage Village and Museum are in
the old section. There are a variety of Indian restaurants, servicing
the residents of Bur Dubai and the neighboring Karama.
Karama
Karama is renowned for its clothing shops and was once notorious for
it's branded products of questionable authenticity, prior to the
authorities stepping in. High-density housing is more affordable here
as is the shopping.
Satwa
Satwa lies between Karama and Jumeirah and is the hive of activity
every evening with fancy cars and hungry pedestrians seeking fast food
and the like.
Jumeirah
An upscale neighbourhood, Jumeirah is famous for its large mosques,
parks and villas. Tree-lined suburbs border the coastline, with it's
many hotels including the spectacular Burj Al Arab.
Sheikh Zayed Highway
Sheikh Zayed Road, parallel to Jumeirah Beach Road, leads to the
Jebel Ali Free Zone. The high-rise designs of innovative architects
have mushroomed along this main arterial highway.
Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City
Dubai Internet City and Dubai Media City, the brainchild of H.H
Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, houses both large Multinational
IT and Media companies as well as budding start-up companies.
Jebel Ali Free Zone
Further up Sheikh Zayed Road is the JAFZ. Warehousing facilities are
conveniently located here and so is Dubal, one of the largest aluminum
